According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, rain chances will primarily favor the afternoon and early evening hours each day. Coverage is generally expected to increase Saturday and Sunday compared with Friday.
Friday brings relatively limited rain chances across much of central Mississippi. Jackson has a 15% chance around midday and a 20% chance during the afternoon. Chances are higher farther south, reaching 65% around Hattiesburg Friday afternoon.
Rain becomes more widespread Saturday. In Jackson, precipitation chances rise to 60% during the afternoon before slipping to 55% during the evening. Vicksburg and Winnsboro also reach 60%, while chances increase to 80% around Hattiesburg during the afternoon.
Sunday currently carries the greatest rain chances for several locations. Jackson reaches a 70% chance around midday and 75% during the afternoon and early evening.
Farther east and south, probabilities are higher. Meridian reaches 80% Sunday afternoon, while Brookhaven also peaks at 80%. Hattiesburg has the highest probability shown on the NWS outlook, reaching 95% Sunday afternoon and early evening.
Starkville has a 70% chance around midday Sunday, while Greenville's chances peak at 55%.
The NWS said locally heavy rainfall will be possible with the weekend showers and storms, but the outlook does not provide specific rainfall totals. Residents should expect periods of unsettled weather rather than continuous rain, with afternoon and early evening hours generally carrying the greatest opportunity for storms.
