Jackson, MS – Fire danger is expected to remain a concern across much of Mississippi beginning Sunday, October 18, as low humidity and dry vegetation create conditions that could allow outdoor fires to spread. Residents are being urged to exercise caution throughout the week, particularly during the afternoon and early evening hours.
According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, the combination of low relative humidity and dry fuels will contribute to increased fire danger across its forecast area. Forecasters are encouraging residents to follow local burn bans and take additional precautions with any outdoor burning.
Fire danger expected each afternoon this week
The latest NWS outlook places the Jackson forecast area under Level 1, or limited fire danger, the lowest category on its four level scale.
Although the designation does not indicate extreme fire danger, officials warn that dry conditions can still increase the potential for fires to ignite and spread.
The greatest concern is expected during afternoon and early evening hours each day this week.
Communities within the forecast area include Jackson, Vicksburg, Meridian, Greenville, Greenwood, Brookhaven, Natchez and Hattiesburg, along with portions of neighboring Louisiana and Arkansas.
Residents urged to prevent accidental fires
The National Weather Service recommends exercising extra caution around open flames and complying with any local burning restrictions.
Residents should also secure tow chains to prevent sparks along roadways and properly dispose of cigarettes rather than throwing them onto dry vegetation.
Even relatively small ignition sources can become dangerous when surrounding grass, leaves and other vegetation are dry.
Burn restrictions should be checked locally
Burn bans vary by county and jurisdiction. Residents should verify current restrictions with local authorities before starting any outdoor fire.
The forecast highlights the importance of preventing accidental ignitions as dry conditions continue throughout the week.
