Jackson, MS – Residents across central and southern Mississippi are being urged to avoid outdoor burning as elevated fire danger conditions threaten communities from Tuesday, Oct. 27, through Thursday, Oct. 29, raising concerns about fires spreading rapidly through dry vegetation.
According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, a combination of low relative humidity and dry vegetation will create an elevated fire danger threat across much of the region for several consecutive days.
The agency has classified the threat as Level 2, or elevated, meaning fires are more likely to escape control if ignited.
Fire Danger Highest During Afternoon Hours
The greatest concern will occur during the afternoon and early evening hours each day through Thursday.
Communities including Jackson, Vicksburg, Meridian, Greenville, Greenwood, Columbus, Natchez, Brookhaven and Hattiesburg are within the highlighted risk area.
Dry vegetation can ignite easily under these conditions, allowing small fires to become difficult to contain.
Outdoor Burning Strongly Discouraged
The National Weather Service is discouraging open burning and reminding residents to follow any local burn bans currently in effect.
Residents using outdoor equipment should secure tow chains to prevent sparks from dragging along roadways.
Cigarettes should also be disposed of properly rather than discarded outdoors, where dry grass and vegetation could ignite.
Fire Risk Continues Through Thursday
Elevated fire danger is expected to persist through Thursday, Oct. 29, as dry conditions remain a concern across the region.
The advisory highlights an increased potential for fires to escape control, not an active wildfire emergency.
Residents should remain cautious during outdoor activities and check with local officials before conducting any burning.
With Halloween approaching Saturday, Oct. 31, anyone planning outdoor fires or celebrations should review local restrictions and updated weather conditions.
