Jackson, MS – Mississippi residents face several days of increased fire danger beginning Tuesday, October 13, with stronger winds expected Friday, October 16, potentially making conditions more hazardous across central and southern portions of the state.
According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, a combination of low relative humidity, dry vegetation and windy conditions will increase wildfire concerns during the afternoon and early evening hours through the latter part of the week.
Forecasters have classified the fire danger as Level 1, or limited, across much of the Jackson forecast area, including Jackson, Vicksburg, Meridian, Hattiesburg, Greenville, Greenwood and surrounding communities.
On Tuesday, October 13, the greatest fire concerns are concentrated across eastern portions of the forecast area, including communities near Meridian, Philadelphia, Columbus and Hattiesburg.
Conditions are expected to become more widespread Wednesday through Friday as dry vegetation and periods of gusty winds continue to create favorable conditions for fires to spread.
Friday, October 16, presents an additional concern. A strong cold front moving through Mississippi is expected to produce sustained northwest winds of 20 to 25 mph, with gusts reaching 30 to 35 mph.
The strongest winds are expected from early morning through the afternoon.
These conditions could cause weak trees and limbs to break, while drivers of high profile vehicles may experience difficulty maintaining control during stronger gusts.
The combination of dry vegetation and stronger winds could also increase the potential for rapidly spreading outdoor fires.
Residents are encouraged to avoid unnecessary outdoor burning, follow local burn restrictions, properly extinguish cigarettes and secure trailer chains to prevent sparks along roadways.
Motorists traveling Interstate 20, Interstate 55 and Interstate 59 should remain alert for gusty conditions Friday.
Although the National Weather Service currently places the threat at its lowest category, residents should monitor updated forecasts as the week progresses.
