Minneapolis, MN – The Twin Cities officially experienced their first freeze of the season Friday morning, Nov. 6, ending a 183 day stretch of temperatures remaining above freezing at Minneapolis St. Paul International Airport.
According to the National Weather Service Twin Cities office, temperatures at MSP Airport dropped below 32 degrees early Friday as clearing skies allowed colder air to settle across the metropolitan area.
The first freeze marks a significant seasonal milestone.
The National Weather Service confirmed that the airport had remained above freezing since May 6, 2026.
Friday's temperature drop ended that stretch, marking the arrival of the first recorded freeze of the fall season at the airport.
The chilly conditions extended across portions of the Twin Cities metropolitan area, including Minneapolis, St. Paul and surrounding communities.
Residents heading outdoors Friday morning encountered temperatures cold enough for frost and freezing conditions in some locations.
Sunshine returns after the frosty morning.
Despite the cold start, the National Weather Service expects sunshine to return across much of the region Friday.
Afternoon highs will range between 40 and 45 degrees, providing some relief from the early morning chill.
Cloud cover is expected to increase overnight as the region transitions toward a milder weekend weather pattern.
Temperatures climb into the 50s this weekend.
Saturday will bring partly sunny skies, with afternoon highs ranging from 50 to 55 degrees.
Overnight lows are expected between 35 and 40 degrees.
Sunday will continue the warming trend, with afternoon temperatures reaching between 52 and 57 degrees.
Morning lows Sunday will range from 30 to 40 degrees, meaning some communities could still experience near freezing conditions before temperatures rise.
The National Weather Service expects a gradual warmup through the weekend following Friday's historic seasonal transition.
