Duluth, MN – An unusually warm October weekend is bringing increased fire weather concerns to northeastern Minnesota and northwestern Wisconsin, with temperatures climbing into the 80s and gusty southerly winds creating conditions that could allow outdoor fires to spread rapidly Saturday, October 10.
According to the National Weather Service NWS in Duluth , near critical fire weather conditions are expected from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m. Saturday as strong winds combine with relatively low humidity across the region.
Forecasters expect southerly wind gusts between 25 and 35 mph, while relative humidity levels could fall to around 35%.
These conditions can increase the risk of rapidly spreading grass, brush and vegetation fires, particularly where dry fuels are present.
The fire weather concern comes alongside unusually warm temperatures for mid October.
Saturday afternoon highs are expected to reach the lower and middle 80s across much of the Northland.
Brainerd could reach approximately 84 degrees, while Aitkin, Hinckley and portions of northwestern Wisconsin may climb into the middle 80s.
Duluth is forecast to reach around 82 degrees, with similarly warm conditions extending into nearby inland communities.
Locations closer to Lake Superior and farther north are expected to remain somewhat cooler.
The unusually warm weather continues Sunday, October 11, with highs generally ranging from the 70s to lower 80s across the region.
However, Saturday's combination of gusty winds and lower humidity presents the more immediate concern.
The NWS urges residents to avoid outdoor burning and report wildfires to local authorities.
Residents should also use caution with activities that could produce sparks, including equipment operation and disposal of smoking materials.
Although the forecast identifies near critical fire weather conditions, the supplied graphics do not indicate that a Red Flag Warning has been issued.
Residents should monitor local burning restrictions and updated weather forecasts throughout Saturday.
