Duluth, MN – Widespread frost and areas of freezing temperatures are expected across northern Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin late Sunday night into Monday morning, with lows falling into the lower 30s.
According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, Freeze Warnings and Frost Advisories are in effect from 1 a.m. through 9 a.m. Monday. Clear skies and light winds will allow temperatures to fall rapidly overnight, especially away from Lake Superior.
Forecast lows include around 30 degrees at Big Falls, 31 at Hurley, Wisconsin, and 32 at International Falls, Bigfork, Solon Springs and Hayward. Ely, Virginia, Moose Lake and Phillips are forecast near 33 to 34.
Duluth should remain somewhat warmer near 36 degrees, while communities immediately along Lake Superior will also benefit from the relatively warmer lake. Grand Marais is forecast near 37 and Silver Bay near 38.
For some communities, this could bring the first significant frost or freeze of the fall growing season. Sensitive outdoor vegetation could be damaged or killed where temperatures reach freezing, and residents in affected areas should protect plants before Sunday night.
The cold will follow a sunny Sunday with highs ranging from 56 to 64 degrees.
Temperatures rebound quickly after Monday morning. Monday afternoon highs will reach 56 to 65, followed by a stronger warmup Tuesday with highs from 66 to 75. Wednesday remains sunny with highs of 61 to 69.
For Duluth and northern Minnesota, the main concern is the overnight period through 9 a.m. Monday. Widespread frost is expected away from Lake Superior, with the coldest locations falling to around 30 degrees before temperatures begin recovering Monday morning.
