Duluth, Minnesota – Temperatures dropping into the 30s tonight could damage sensitive vegetation across northern Minnesota before a rapid shift to widespread rain and thunderstorms Monday, giving residents two weather concerns within the next 24 hours.
According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, a Frost Advisory covers a large portion of the Northland tonight into early Monday morning. Clear skies and light winds will allow lows to fall into the low and mid 30s across colder interior locations, particularly Minnesota’s Arrowhead and far northern Minnesota. Northwest Wisconsin also faces frost potential.
Duluth is expected to remain warmer at about 41 degrees, while International Falls could reach 34, Ely 37, Grand Marais 45 and Silver Bay 49. Residents in colder areas should cover sensitive vegetation or move potted plants indoors tonight.
Conditions change Monday as low pressure brings widespread showers and embedded thunderstorms. The NWS places the chance of at least 0.5 inches of rain at 50% to 95% across the region by early Tuesday morning.
The I 35 corridor and North Shore toward Silver Bay have at least a 50% chance of receiving 1 inch or more. Ponding could develop in low lying areas. Storms are not expected to become severe, although hail up to 0.5 inches is possible Monday afternoon.
Rain ends Monday night into early Tuesday, with another chance arriving Wednesday evening.
