Duluth, Minnesota – Temperatures could fall to 34 degrees overnight, bringing frost that could damage or kill sensitive plants through Tuesday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, a frost advisory takes effect at midnight and continues until 8 a.m. Tuesday across parts of northeastern and north central Minnesota and northwestern Wisconsin. The advisory applies to inland areas away from Lake Superior.
In Minnesota, the advisory covers Crow Wing, Northern Aitkin, Pine, South Aitkin, Koochiching, North Cass, North Itasca, South Itasca, Carlton and South St. Louis, Central St. Louis, North St. Louis, and Northern Cook and Lake counties.
Communities in the affected area include Duluth, International Falls, Hibbing, Grand Rapids, Brainerd, Ely, Aitkin, Walker, Hinckley and Pine City.
Across Wisconsin, the advisory covers Price, Ashland, Bayfield, Burnett, Douglas, Iron, Sawyer and Washburn counties. Superior, Ashland, Bayfield, Hayward, Hurley, Spooner, Grantsburg and Phillips are among the communities included.
The primary concern is sensitive outdoor vegetation. Frost can form as temperatures approach the mid 30s, potentially damaging tender plants or killing those left exposed. Residents should take steps before midnight to cover vulnerable vegetation or move potted plants to a protected location.
The advisory remains in effect through 8 a.m. Tuesday. Residents in inland communities should keep plants protected through the early morning, when the coldest conditions and frost risk are expected.
