Duluth, MN – Residents across northeastern Minnesota and northwestern Wisconsin could face another round of thunderstorms Wednesday, Oct. 28, with small hail, periods of heavier rain and changing travel conditions possible across the Northland.
According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, lingering light rain and drizzle will end Tuesday night before another weather system brings showers and embedded thunderstorms Wednesday afternoon and evening.
Some thunderstorms could produce hail up to penny size, particularly from the Brainerd Lakes region eastward across northeastern Minnesota into northwestern Wisconsin.
Forecasters expect widespread rainfall amounts between 0.20 and 0.50 inches, although localized totals exceeding half an inch are possible.
Communities including Duluth, Brainerd, Grand Rapids, Virginia, Ely and Two Harbors could experience periods of rain as the system moves through.
Across northwestern Wisconsin, areas near Superior, Ashland, Hayward and Siren may also see showers and isolated thunderstorms.
Wednesday afternoon temperatures will remain relatively mild for late October, with highs ranging from 54 to 68 degrees across the forecast region.
Drivers traveling Wednesday afternoon and evening should prepare for wet pavement, reduced visibility during heavier showers and possible brief hail.
Conditions are expected to improve Thursday and Friday as drier weather returns.
Thursday highs will range from 45 to 58 degrees, followed by 47 to 60 degrees Friday.
Overnight temperatures could fall into the mid 20s in colder locations, particularly Thursday night into Friday morning, raising the possibility of freezing conditions.
The weekend forecast remains relatively mild, with highs generally reaching the upper 40s to lower 60s.
A 20% chance of showers is forecast for both Saturday, Oct. 31, and Sunday, Nov. 1.
Residents planning Halloween activities should monitor updated forecasts, especially with another slight chance of rain returning over the weekend.
The National Weather Service has not indicated a widespread severe thunderstorm threat in the supplied forecast.
