Winnipeg, MB – Families across Winnipeg are being urged to inspect their children's Halloween candy after police received two disturbing reports involving chocolates allegedly containing straight pins.
The warning follows Halloween celebrations Saturday, Oct. 31, and raises safety concerns for parents whose children may still have uninspected candy at home.
According to the Winnipeg Police Service, authorities received two separate reports involving Halloween chocolates with straight pins embedded inside.
The incidents were reported in the Garden City and Royalwood neighborhoods, located in different areas of Winnipeg.
Police are asking families to carefully inspect all Halloween candy before allowing children to eat it.
The department issued a public advisory describing the reported incidents as a crime and deeply disturbing.
Although the two reports originated in specific neighborhoods, the warning applies to families throughout Winnipeg who collected Halloween treats.
Parents and caregivers should examine candy packaging for signs of tampering, including tears, punctures or unusual openings.
Any candy containing suspicious objects should not be eaten. Families who discover potentially tampered treats should preserve the candy and its packaging and contact police.
Authorities are encouraging residents to report similar discoveries immediately.
The Winnipeg Police Service provided its non emergency telephone number, 204 986 6222, for residents with information or additional reports.
Police said receiving reports of similar incidents will help the department provide further public safety updates.
The advisory did not identify specific chocolate brands, provide information about possible suspects or establish where the allegedly tampered candy originated.
No injuries were mentioned in the public advisory.
The reports come as families continue sorting through Halloween treats collected over the weekend.
Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and share the official warning with other parents and caregivers.
Further information may be released as police receive additional reports.
