Pontiac, MI – A Detroit man accused of shooting another man twice during an August confrontation at a Pontiac park has been arrested and charged with six felonies, including assault with intent to murder, authorities announced Thursday.
According to the Oakland County Sheriff 's Office, deputies responded around 8:52 p.m. Aug. 23 to Jaycee Park, 498 E. Walton Blvd., after a caller reported that her uncle had been shot.
Deputies found the victim near the rear of the park suffering from gunshot wounds to his abdomen and right buttock. Deputies provided aid until Waterford Regional Fire Department and Star EMS personnel arrived and assumed medical care.
Investigators allege the victim and several other people had been involved in a verbal dispute that escalated into a physical confrontation. During the altercation, Ruben Aleman Contreras of Detroit allegedly produced a handgun and fired at the victim, striking him twice.
Authorities said Contreras then fled in a vehicle before deputies arrived. Investigators recovered shell casings from the scene.
Members of the sheriff's Fugitive Apprehension Team located Contreras in Dearborn on Wednesday and arrested him without incident.
The Oakland County Prosecutor's Office authorized six felony charges: one count of assault with intent to murder, one count of felonious assault, one count of possession of a firearm by a prohibited person and three counts of felony firearm.
Contreras was arraigned Thursday in 50th District Court. Bond was denied, and a probable cause conference is scheduled for Oct. 13 at 1:30 p.m.
The charges are allegations. Contreras is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
