Petoskey, MI – Drivers traveling along M 119 in Emmet County should prepare for lane closures and possible delays beginning Wednesday, Oct. 21, as the Michigan Department of Transportation schedules soil testing near Beach Road. The restrictions are expected to continue through Friday, Oct. 23.
According to the Michigan Department of Transportation MDOT , crews will conduct soil borings along M 119 north of Beach Road as part of preliminary investigations for a potential future road improvement project.
The work is intended to help officials evaluate high water levels near the intersection and determine possible solutions.
M 119 Lane Closures and Traffic Restrictions
MDOT says the project will require single lane closures, leaving one lane available for alternating traffic.
Temporary traffic signals will control vehicles traveling in opposite directions through the work zone.
Motorists should expect possible delays, particularly during periods of heavier traffic.
The work is scheduled to begin Wednesday, Oct. 21, and conclude Friday, Oct. 23, weather permitting.
Why Crews Are Working Near Beach Road
The soil borings will provide information about underground conditions near the intersection.
MDOT says the investigation is being conducted in preparation for a potential future project addressing high water levels in the area.
No construction timeline for that possible future project was announced in the department's Oct. 14 release.
What Drivers Should Know
Residents, commuters and visitors traveling through the Petoskey area should allow additional time when using M 119 during the three day operation.
Drivers should follow temporary traffic signals, watch for roadside crews and avoid entering the restricted lane until directed.
Because the schedule is weather dependent, the closure dates could change.
Motorists can check Michigan's official Mi Drive traffic information service for updates on road conditions and construction activity.
