Mount Clemens, MI – Macomb County Sheriff 's Office deputies responded to a report of a disorderly incident and animal complaint at the First United Methodist Church on North Gratiot on September 2, 2026, at approximately 4:30 AM. Authorities arrived on the scene and discovered information regarding the death of a kitten.
According to the Macomb County Sheriff 's Office, 33 year old Marcus Winfrey of Mount Clemens allegedly stomped on and killed the animal. Investigators were initially unable to secure video footage of the incident due to extenuating circumstances, but the footage was obtained and reviewed on Wednesday, September 16, 2026.
Following the investigation, Winfrey was arraigned on Friday, September 4, 2026, at 41B District Court in Clinton Township. He faces one count of Animals – killing/torturing – first degree, which is classified as a 10 year felony.
Bond for the defendant was set at $50,000 cash/surety/10%. As of the latest update, Winfrey remains in custody at the Macomb County Jail.
