Marquette, MI – Michigan's Upper Peninsula is headed for a sharp temperature swing, with some areas potentially falling near freezing before a major weekend warmup sends afternoon highs toward 80 degrees.
According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, a cold front moving through the region Wednesday will bring breezy conditions and a few showers. Lake effect rain showers are expected to develop across eastern areas later Wednesday and continue into Thursday.
Forecasters stressed that a washout is not expected, with predominantly dry weather returning for the remainder of the week and into the weekend.
Wednesday highs will range from 60 to 70 degrees , followed by a cooler Thursday with highs of 55 to 65.
The chilliest conditions arrive Thursday night. Temperatures could fall to 28 to 40 degrees , with the coldest readings expected across interior portions of the Upper Peninsula.
Then temperatures rebound quickly.
Friday's highs reach 60 to 68 before surging to 70 to 80 degrees Saturday and Sunday . Breezy conditions are also expected during the weekend, potentially making it feel more like late summer than the second weekend of October.
A cold front is forecast to move through late Sunday, ending the unusual warmth and bringing cooler weather early next week.
For Marquette, Marquette County and communities across Upper Michigan, the combination of near freezing nighttime temperatures followed by highs approaching 80 represents a substantial change over just a few days.
Residents planning weekend outdoor activities should also account for the breezy conditions and monitor the timing of Sunday's approaching cold front.
