Marquette, MI – Strong southwest winds are expected across Michigan's Upper Peninsula Saturday, October 17, with gusts approaching 45 mph in some communities and increasingly hazardous conditions developing along Lake Superior. The strongest impacts are expected near the Keweenaw Peninsula, where building waves could make boating and shoreline activities dangerous through the weekend.
According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, gusty southwest winds will continue Saturday and Sunday, accompanying a gradual warming trend across Upper Michigan.
Calumet could experience gusts reaching 44 mph Saturday afternoon, while Copper Harbor may see gusts near 40 mph. Houghton could reach 37 mph, with additional gusty conditions expected across Ontonagon, Ironwood and surrounding communities.
Winds are forecast to remain elevated Sunday, with gusts approaching 44 mph in Calumet and 39 mph in Houghton.
Farther east, Marquette could experience gusts reaching 38 mph Sunday morning, while Negaunee may see gusts around 37 mph.
Dangerous Lake Superior Conditions
The Weather Service warns that strengthening southwest winds will increase wave heights, particularly along the Keweenaw Peninsula.
Boaters and other mariners should monitor marine forecasts closely and consider postponing trips during hazardous conditions.
Residents near exposed shorelines should also exercise caution around docks, piers and waterfront areas.
Saturday temperatures will generally remain in the 50s, with overnight lows dropping into the 30s and lower 40s.
By Sunday, afternoon highs should climb into the middle 50s to middle 60s.
The Weather Service also reminds residents to obey local burning restrictions, as gusty winds can increase the risk of fires spreading.
October 22–26 Extended Weather Outlook
NOAA's Climate Prediction Center favors above normal temperatures across much of the Upper Midwest, including Upper Michigan, during October 22–26.
The precipitation outlook places the western Upper Peninsula closer to near normal conditions, with below normal precipitation favored farther east.
While exact temperatures and rainfall amounts remain uncertain, the extended outlook suggests a generally warmer pattern could continue into late October.
Residents should monitor updated National Weather Service forecasts for changing wind speeds and Lake Superior marine conditions.
