MARQUETTE, MI – Strong northerly winds, Great Lakes gales and a developing rain snow mix are expected to affect Michigan's Upper Peninsula beginning Thursday, November 5, with shoreline wind gusts exceeding 40 mph in some locations and temperatures potentially dropping into the teens by Friday night.
According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, widespread rainfall will transition into lake effect showers Thursday as colder air moves across the region. Snowflakes could begin mixing with rain later in the day before a more widespread rain snow mix develops overnight.
Strong Winds and Lake Effect Snow Arrive Thursday The National Weather Service expects northerly winds to strengthen throughout Thursday, producing gale conditions over portions of the Great Lakes.
Locations near the shoreline could experience gusts exceeding 40 mph, creating hazardous conditions for marine activities and potentially making travel difficult in exposed areas.
Thursday afternoon temperatures will range from 43 to 52 degrees before dropping to between 24 and 32 degrees overnight.
Lake effect rain and snow showers are expected to continue into Friday morning as colder air settles across Upper Michigan.
Temperatures Could Plunge to 18 Degrees Friday Night Friday, November 6, will remain chilly, with afternoon highs between 37 and 45 degrees.
The National Weather Service expects lingering lake effect rain and snow showers to gradually end Friday afternoon.
Temperatures will fall further Friday night, reaching lows between 18 and 28 degrees across the forecast area.
Residents should prepare for freezing overnight conditions, particularly in colder inland communities.
By Saturday, November 7, conditions are expected to improve, with partly cloudy skies and afternoon temperatures recovering to between 43 and 49 degrees.
Travelers along Lake Superior and Lake Michigan shorelines should remain alert for strong winds and changing weather conditions Thursday.
The National Weather Service encourages residents to monitor updated forecasts as lake effect precipitation and wind conditions develop.
