Marquette, Michigan – Sensitive vegetation across inland Upper Michigan could sustain frost damage overnight as colder, drier air and light winds create favorable conditions for frost formation, particularly across the western half of the Upper Peninsula.
According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, Frost Advisories have been issued for areas where the risk is greatest tonight. Interior portions of western Upper Michigan face the highest likelihood, although frost cannot be ruled out across inland communities farther east.
The combination of a cool, dry air mass and calm to light winds will allow temperatures near the ground to fall enough for frost to develop. The threat will be more limited near the Great Lakes, where water temperatures can moderate overnight cooling.
Gardeners and homeowners across inland communities should bring sensitive potted plants indoors or cover vulnerable vegetation before temperatures reach their overnight lows. Newly planted flowers and other cold sensitive crops could be damaged if left exposed.
Residents in Marquette County and surrounding areas should pay particular attention to inland locations away from Lake Superior, where temperatures can fall more quickly under calm conditions.
Frost remains possible through the overnight hours into Monday morning. Additional cold weather alerts may be needed if similar conditions develop again during upcoming nights.
