Marquette, MI – Upper Michigan is entering the heart of its fall frost and freeze season, but the next few days will feature lake effect rain followed by a notable warmup Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, near average early October temperatures are expected Sunday, along with partly to mostly cloudy skies and breezy conditions. Scattered lake effect rain showers will develop across eastern portions of the Upper Peninsula, especially Sunday evening.
Frost and freezing temperatures become an increasing concern across northern Michigan during this part of fall, although the timing of the first frost varies significantly by location. The current NWS outlook does not indicate an imminent widespread frost or freeze.
Instead, lake effect showers will remain the main weather feature through Monday, primarily across eastern Upper Michigan. Sunday highs are expected to range from 58 to 64 degrees.
Monday will be cooler, with highs ranging from about 50 to 60 degrees as lake effect showers continue in the east.
A substantial change arrives Tuesday. Winds will turn southerly, pulling warmer air back into the Upper Peninsula. High temperatures are forecast to reach 65 to 70 degrees under partly cloudy skies.
For residents watching for the season’s next frost or freeze, the immediate forecast favors warmer rather than colder conditions by Tuesday. Upper Michigan should first contend with breezy weather and localized lake effect rain through Monday before temperatures climb well into the 60s Tuesday.
