Marquette, MI – Freeze and frost alerts cover much of northern Michigan tonight into Saturday morning, with parts of the Upper Peninsula potentially falling to 23 degrees.
According to the National Weather Service offices in Marquette and Gaylord, the coldest conditions are expected overnight, but alert types and temperatures vary by location.
The NWS Marquette graphic issued at 11:55 a.m. EDT Friday shows a Freeze Warning across most of the Upper Peninsula. Temperatures could fall as low as 23 degrees, with freezing conditions beginning around 10 p.m. EDT, or 9 p.m. CDT, and continuing through Saturday morning.
Frost and freeze conditions in the warning area could kill crops and other sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing. Residents are advised to protect tender plants and exposed pipes.
Farther east, the National Weather Service in Gaylord has issued a Frost Advisory for western and central Chippewa County and western and eastern Mackinac County. Temperatures there could fall to 34 degrees.
A separate Frost Advisory covers Cheboygan, Presque Isle, Otsego, Montmorency, Kalkaska, Crawford, Oscoda, Wexford, Missaukee, Roscommon and Ogemaw counties in northern Lower Michigan, where temperatures could reach 33 degrees.
Both Gaylord advisories run from 10 p.m. EDT Friday through 8 a.m. Saturday. Frost could harm or kill sensitive outdoor plants if they are left uncovered.
Residents should check their specific local alert because conditions range from a hard freeze threat in parts of the Upper Peninsula to frost producing temperatures farther south and east.
