Marquette, MI – A Freeze Warning remains in effect across much of central and western Upper Michigan tonight, with temperatures expected to fall as low as 27 degrees.
According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, the warning runs from 10 p.m. EDT Friday through 10 a.m. EDT Saturday. In areas observing Central Daylight Time, the warning begins at 9 p.m. Friday and expires at 9 a.m. Saturday.
The warning covers Ontonagon, Northern Houghton, Baraga, Marquette, Alger, Luce, Gogebic, Iron, Dickinson, Menominee, Delta, Southern Schoolcraft, Southern Houghton and Northern Schoolcraft counties and zones.
Communities within the warning area include Marquette, Houghton, Hancock, Ironwood, Iron Mountain, Iron River, Escanaba, Menominee, Munising, Manistique, Newberry, Ontonagon, L'Anse, Gwinn, Gladstone, Grand Marais and Seney.
Sub freezing temperatures could produce frost and freeze conditions capable of killing crops and other sensitive vegetation. Unprotected outdoor plumbing also could be damaged.
The weather service advises residents to protect tender plants from the cold. Outdoor water pipes can be wrapped or drained, while in ground sprinkler systems should be drained and above ground pipes covered to reduce the risk of freezing.
Residents across the warning area should expect the coldest conditions overnight into Saturday morning, with the Freeze Warning scheduled to expire by 10 a.m. EDT, or 9 a.m. CDT, Saturday.
