Marquette, MI – A Wind Advisory is in effect across Marquette County in Michigan's Upper Peninsula until 2 p.m. EDT Sunday, Oct. 18, as strong southwest winds threaten to bring down tree limbs, scatter unsecured outdoor objects and potentially cause isolated power outages.
According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, southwest winds of 15 to 20 mph are expected, with gusts reaching up to 45 mph. The advisory includes the cities of Marquette and Negaunee.
The advisory was issued at 12:29 a.m. EDT Sunday and became effective at 8 a.m., covering approximately 68,100 residents in the affected area.
What impacts are expected across Marquette County?
Forecasters warn that gusty winds could blow around unsecured outdoor objects and cause tree limbs to fall.
A few power outages may also occur if strong gusts damage trees or electrical infrastructure.
Residents are encouraged to secure lightweight patio furniture, decorations, trash containers and other outdoor items before the strongest winds arrive.
Could driving become dangerous Sunday?
The National Weather Service specifically cautions that winds this strong can make driving difficult, particularly for high profile vehicles.
Drivers operating trucks, recreational vehicles and trailers should use additional caution on exposed roads and when encountering sudden crosswinds.
Motorists traveling through Marquette County, including areas near Marquette and Negaunee, should remain alert for changing wind conditions.
When will the Wind Advisory expire?
The advisory is scheduled to remain in effect until 2 p.m. EDT Sunday, although conditions and alert timing may change if forecasters issue updates.
Winds are expected to gradually weaken later Sunday as a quieter weather pattern develops across the Upper Peninsula.
Earlier regional forecasts from NWS Marquette also indicated improving conditions Sunday night, followed by predominantly dry weather through at least the first half of the week.
Residents should continue monitoring official weather updates and report downed power lines to their utility provider.
