Lansing, MI – Michigan state and local governments will soon be able to apply for federal funding supporting police, courts, victim services and other criminal justice programs as the state opens its fiscal 2027 Byrne Justice Assistance Grant application period.
According to Michigan State Police, the Grants and Community Services Division will begin accepting applications for Byrne JAG funding at 8 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14.
The Byrne JAG program is a major source of federal criminal justice funding distributed to state and local jurisdictions. In Michigan, grants are awarded to eligible government entities for programs covering several areas of the criminal justice system.
Potential uses include community relations programs, indigent defense, multijurisdictional drug task forces, priority population drug courts and services for crime victims, according to state police.
Before applications open, Michigan State Police will host a pre application informational webinar Tuesday, Oct. 13. Officials strongly encourage potential applicants to participate. Registration information and additional application materials are available through the Michigan State Police Byrne JAG website.
Government agencies interested in the funding will have slightly more than a month to complete the application process.
Applications must be submitted to the Grants and Community Services Division through the state's MGX Grant Management System no later than 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18.
The announcement applies to fiscal year 2027 grant funding. Individual award amounts and recipients were not announced because the competitive application process has not yet begun.
Agencies considering an application should review eligibility requirements and program guidance before the submission window opens, particularly because applications received after the November deadline may not be considered.
