Keene Township, MI – Two people were critically injured Tuesday night after their car collided with a farm implement at an intersection in Ionia County, authorities said.
According to the Ionia County Sheriff ’s Office, deputies responded at approximately 10:54 p.m. Tuesday to the intersection of Feuerstein and Sparks roads in Keene Township for a reported personal injury crash.
Investigators said a farm implement was turning left onto Sparks Road when a southbound Ford Fiesta attempted to pass it in a designated no passing zone.
As the farm equipment completed its turn, the Ford struck the trailer portion of the implement, according to the sheriff’s office.
Both people inside the Ford had to be extricated from the vehicle following the collision. Authorities said the two occupants were transported to Corewell Health in Grand Rapids in critical condition.
The sheriff’s office did not release the names, ages or hometowns of the people involved. No information was provided about injuries to the operator of the farm equipment.
Emergency crews from several agencies responded to the scene, including Saranac Fire, Belding Fire, Life Ambulance and University of Michigan Health Sparrow’s Survival Flight. Reed and Hoppes Towing also assisted.
The crash remains under investigation by the Ionia County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities did not announce whether citations or charges had been issued as of Wednesday.
The collision occurred in Keene Township, west of Ionia and east of the Grand Rapids metropolitan area.
Motorists traveling rural roads during harvest season are urged to remain alert for slow moving farm equipment and obey posted passing restrictions.
