Kalamazoo, MI – Drivers traveling through southwest Michigan should prepare for delays beginning Monday as a busy I 94 ramp in Kalamazoo closes for more than a day of repair work.
According to the Michigan Department of Transportation, the eastbound I 94 Exit 74B ramp to northbound US 131 will close at 6 a.m. Monday, Sept. 14. The closure is scheduled to remain in place until 5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15.
The closure will allow crews to complete joint repairs on the ramp. Motorists who normally use the connection between eastbound I 94 and northbound US 131 will need to follow a posted detour or find another route.
MDOT said ramp traffic will be detoured using eastbound I 94, Oakland Drive and westbound I 94 before connecting with northbound US 131.
Drivers should expect delays around the affected interchange, particularly during periods of heavier traffic. MDOT is advising motorists to consider alternate routes while the work is underway.
The closure could affect travelers throughout the Kalamazoo area and other motorists using I 94 and US 131 to travel across southwest Michigan.
Transportation officials said completely closing the ramp during this type of work creates a safer work area for construction crews and motorists. The repairs are intended to provide a smoother and safer driving surface while extending the life of the roadway.
Weather or other unforeseen circumstances could potentially affect road construction schedules. Motorists traveling through Kalamazoo Monday and Tuesday should allow additional time and watch for construction signs and changing traffic conditions near the interchange.
