Gaylord, MI – Northern Michigan residents can expect another unusually warm Columbus Day across parts of the region Monday, Oct. 12, before a cold front brings widespread rain chances overnight and cooler temperatures heading into midweek.
According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, mild and dry conditions will continue Sunday night, with clouds increasing north of the Mackinac Bridge. Most locations will remain dry Monday before showers begin developing late in the afternoon.
Columbus Day Temperatures Could Reach 82 Degrees
Northern Lower Michigan will experience the warmest conditions Monday, with afternoon highs ranging from 72 to 82 degrees.
Communities across the eastern Upper Peninsula will remain noticeably cooler, with highs between 63 and 68 degrees.
The temperature difference will create contrasting holiday conditions across the region, although much of northern Michigan should remain dry during the daytime hours.
Rain chances will initially favor the eastern Upper Peninsula and far northern Lower Michigan late Monday afternoon.
Rain Spreads Across Northern Michigan Overnight
The National Weather Service expects the highest chance of showers across the region Monday night into Tuesday morning as a cold front moves through.
The approaching system could bring wet roads during the Tuesday morning commute, particularly along Interstate 75 and other major routes connecting northern Lower Michigan with the eastern Upper Peninsula.
Residents traveling overnight or early Tuesday should prepare for changing conditions.
Cooler Temperatures Return Tuesday and Wednesday
Following the cold front, temperatures will begin dropping Tuesday.
Highs across the eastern Upper Peninsula are expected between 56 and 60 degrees, while northern Lower Michigan will see temperatures ranging from 63 to 76 degrees.
By Wednesday, Oct. 14, more seasonable weather will return.
The eastern Upper Peninsula is forecast to reach 54 to 58 degrees, while northern Lower Michigan will see highs between 56 and 66 degrees.
Residents planning Columbus Day activities should monitor the timing of approaching showers, especially if traveling Monday evening.
