Gaylord, Michigan – Clear skies and calm winds could send temperatures into the 30s tonight, bringing patchy frost to parts of northern Michigan.
According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, frost is most likely across the eastern Upper Peninsula, while pockets of frost could develop over the higher terrain of interior northern Lower Michigan if winds become calm enough.
Temperatures could fall into the lower 30s in some locations. The NWS outlook shows a low near 33 degrees around Sault Ste. Marie, while northern Lower Michigan readings include 36 near Atlanta and Grayling and 35 near Mio.
Other communities should remain somewhat warmer. The outlook shows lows near 41 in Gaylord, 42 in Bellaire, 43 in Petoskey and 47 in Alpena. Near Lake Michigan, Traverse City is shown around 50 degrees.
Residents with gardens and other sensitive outdoor vegetation should take precautions tonight. The NWS warns that vulnerable plants could be damaged or killed if left unprotected. Covering sensitive vegetation before temperatures reach their overnight lows can reduce the risk of frost damage.
Frost development will depend partly on wind conditions. Calm winds combined with clear skies allow temperatures near the ground to fall more efficiently, increasing the potential for frost in colder interior locations.
The eastern Upper Peninsula faces the greatest frost potential tonight, with isolated pockets also possible across interior northern Lower Michigan. Residents in frost prone areas should protect sensitive plants before temperatures fall into the 30s overnight.
