Gaylord, MI – Northern Michigan could see its first frost in some communities tonight, with a better chance Monday night as colder October nights settle across the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, frost is possible both Sunday night and Monday night, especially in the traditional colder locations of interior northern Michigan. Otherwise, quieter weather is expected during the first part of the week.
The frost potential comes as northern Michigan enters the part of fall when freezing and near freezing nights become increasingly common. The exact timing of the first frost varies by community, with inland and sheltered locations often cooling more quickly than areas influenced by the Great Lakes.
For this particular cold spell, the NWS says Monday night offers the better chance for frost. No widespread freeze is indicated in the forecast provided.
Before then, most showers will move out early Sunday, although a few very light showers could linger into midday. Afternoon temperatures are forecast to reach 59 to 69 degrees before temperatures fall overnight and frost becomes possible in the usual colder spots.
Monday will be cooler despite partly sunny skies, with highs ranging from 53 to 62 degrees. Frost could become more widespread in susceptible locations Monday night.
Temperatures then begin recovering. Tuesday will be partly sunny with highs of 61 to 66 degrees. Wednesday brings another step upward, with partly to mostly sunny skies and highs ranging from 62 to 71.
Residents with frost sensitive plants should pay particular attention to local temperatures tonight and Monday night. After the frost risk, northern Michigan can expect quieter weather and gradually warmer afternoons through Wednesday.
