Detroit, MI – Thanksgiving travelers in Detroit, Grand Rapids and communities across Michigan could encounter snow showers during the holiday week, according to a new long range outlook. But whether snow will actually fall in either city remains uncertain.
According to the Farmers' Almanac's Oct. 19 update, its Great Lakes, Ohio Valley and Midwest forecast region could experience colder, more winterlike conditions with scattered snow showers or flurries from Monday, Nov. 23, through Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, Nov. 26, 2026.
That region includes Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky. The Almanac suggests brief travel slowdowns could occur where snow showers develop but does not specify snowfall totals, accumulation probabilities or exact timing for Detroit or Grand Rapids.
Michigan's geography makes the distinction important. Detroit's southeastern location and Grand Rapids' proximity to Lake Michigan can produce different snowfall conditions, even during the same weather system.
Farther north, communities around Gaylord and Marquette are also accustomed to early season snowfall. Lake effect snow can develop when cold air moves across relatively warmer Great Lakes waters, producing localized snow bands.
NOAA's Oct. 15 November outlook favors above normal temperatures across the Great Lakes, with below normal precipitation favored in parts of the region. The broader monthly outlook does not rule out individual cold spells or snow showers.
El Niño may influence seasonal weather patterns, but it cannot determine whether Michigan highways will be snowy during a specific holiday travel period.
For motorists using I 75 near Detroit or I 96 between Detroit and Grand Rapids, any developing snow could become relevant to travel plans. However, no specific highway impacts are established by the Almanac's regional projection.
Could Michigan see snow before Thanksgiving? Yes, it is possible, but the long range outlook is not confirmation of snowfall in Detroit, Grand Rapids or elsewhere in the state.
Travelers should monitor National Weather Service forecasts closer to Thanksgiving for city specific snowfall expectations and potential road impacts.
