DETROIT, Michigan – Southeast Michigan is heading into November with temperatures climbing into the 70s around Detroit, but NOAA's extended outlooks suggest a changing precipitation pattern later in the month, raising early questions about rain, snow and Thanksgiving holiday travel.
Detroit could reach 71 degrees Tuesday before rain becomes likely Wednesday. Farther ahead, federal outlooks favor above normal temperatures through much of November, while precipitation probabilities shift as Thanksgiving approaches.
Detroit Could Reach 71 Degrees Before Midweek Rain Arrives According to the National Weather Service, Detroit will see partly sunny skies Saturday, Oct. 31, with a high near 60 degrees.
Sunday warms to 66 degrees as clouds gradually decrease, followed by 65 Monday and 71 Tuesday.
Rain chances begin increasing after 2 a.m. Tuesday night, with rain likely Wednesday, mainly between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. Wednesday's high is expected near 69 degrees.
Additional rain chances continue Thursday and Friday, although the available forecast does not specify precipitation percentages for those days.
Michigan residents will also turn clocks back one hour at 2 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 1, bringing earlier sunsets and more evening travel after dark.
NOAA November Outlook Favors Warmth as Precipitation Patterns Change NOAA's Climate Prediction Center outlooks issued Oct. 30 favor above normal temperatures across Southeast Michigan during Nov. 5 9 and Nov. 7 13.
The Nov. 14 27 outlook continues to favor above normal temperatures across much of Michigan, including Detroit.
Precipitation probabilities change during the month.
During Nov. 5 9, Southeast Michigan falls near the boundary between near normal and below normal precipitation outlook areas.
By Nov. 7 13, below normal precipitation is favored across much of Michigan, including the Detroit area.
The Nov. 14 27 precipitation outlook does not show a clear preference for above or below normal precipitation in Detroit, even as wetter than normal conditions become favored farther south across parts of the Ohio Valley.
That distinction matters for Thanksgiving travelers: a wetter regional pattern does not necessarily mean Detroit itself will experience above normal precipitation.
Thanksgiving Holiday Travel: Could Michigan See Rain or Snow? Thanksgiving falls Thursday, Nov. 26, within NOAA's Nov. 14 27 outlook period.
Although above normal temperatures are favored, the outlook does not rule out individual colder periods or possible snowfall in Southeast Michigan.
However, NOAA has not identified a specific Thanksgiving snowstorm, rainfall event or travel disruption in the supplied guidance.
The long range outlook also cannot determine whether precipitation would fall as rain or snow on Thanksgiving Day.
For now, Detroit's next notable weather change is expected Wednesday, when rain becomes likely following several mild afternoons.
As Thanksgiving approaches, shorter range forecasts will provide a clearer picture of potential rain, snow and holiday travel conditions across Southeast Michigan.
