Detroit, MI – Southeast Michigan is waking up to a chilly Sunday, Oct. 18, with temperatures in the 30s before afternoon sunshine brings a noticeable warmup. Residents across Metro Detroit can expect highs near 60 degrees, followed by several days of warmer, dry weather.
According to the National Weather Service in Detroit/Pontiac, temperatures will recover to seasonal levels Sunday afternoon, with highs generally ranging from 59 to 62 degrees across the region.
Southwest Michigan is not the focus of this forecast, which primarily covers Detroit, Pontiac and surrounding southeast Michigan communities.
How warm will Michigan get Sunday?
After the cold morning, sunshine will help temperatures climb into the lower 60s by afternoon.
Forecasters expect a breezy period Sunday, with wind gusts reaching approximately 20 to 25 mph.
The combination of sunshine and seasonal temperatures should make afternoon outdoor activities more comfortable, although residents may still want a light jacket during breezier periods.
When will warmer temperatures arrive?
Monday, Oct. 19, begins a gradual warming trend, with afternoon highs expected to reach 63 to 66 degrees.
Tuesday, Oct. 20, will bring another mostly sunny day, with highs ranging from 62 to 67 degrees.
The National Weather Service expects sunny skies and above normal temperatures to continue through the remainder of the workweek.
High pressure will support the generally quiet weather pattern, limiting opportunities for precipitation during the early part of the week.
What about Halloween weather?
Looking farther ahead, NOAA's Climate Prediction Center outlook for Oct. 25–31 favors above normal temperatures across Michigan and much of the Great Lakes region.
The same outlook indicates below normal precipitation is favored across much of Michigan, suggesting a potentially warmer and relatively dry pattern heading toward Halloween.
However, the extended outlook covers an entire seven day period and does not guarantee dry weather or specific temperatures on Saturday, Oct. 31.
For now, southeast Michigan residents can look forward to a sunny Sunday afternoon, lighter jackets during the warmer afternoons ahead and a generally pleasant stretch of October weather.
