Battle Creek, MI – A 35 year old man is dead following a violent confrontation with law enforcement Monday evening in Calhoun County, where authorities say gunfire struck police vehicles, two drones were shot down and a residence caught fire during an attempt to serve arrest warrants.
According to the Calhoun County Sheriff 's Office, deputies responded around 5:30 p.m. Monday, October 26, to a residence on Running Deer Ridge in Leroy Township to execute search and probation violation warrants involving 35 year old Travis Baker.
The warrants followed a domestic incident involving Baker and his parents the previous day. Authorities reported concerns about his behavior and possession of firearms.
Gunfire Erupts During Police Response
The sheriff's Special Response Team deployed a drone to assess the residence before attempting entry.
Authorities say shots were fired from inside the home as officers approached, with numerous rounds striking specialized response vehicles belonging to the sheriff's office and Battle Creek Police Department .
Two sheriff's office drones were also shot down.
With nearby homes potentially exposed to stray gunfire, authorities issued an emergency shelter in place alert, instructing residents to remain indoors and avoid windows and exterior walls. Evacuation was also offered.
House Fire and Death Under Investigation
During the confrontation, a Battle Creek police officer discharged a firearm from a specialized response vehicle.
A fire subsequently engulfed the residence, preventing officers from immediately determining Baker's condition. He was later confirmed dead.
Authorities have not established whether Baker died from gunfire, the fire or another cause.
The shelter in place advisory was lifted Monday evening after officials determined the immediate threat had ended.
Michigan State Police and multiple local law enforcement and fire agencies assisted.
The officer involved shooting and circumstances surrounding the house fire remain under investigation. Officials say there is no ongoing threat to neighboring residents.
