Ann Arbor, MI — A major milestone for Michigan's fire service is approaching as Ann Arbor prepares to celebrate the grand opening of its newly reconstructed Fire Station 4, a facility city officials describe as the state's first net zero, carbon neutral fire station.
According to the City of Ann Arbor Fire Department, the official grand opening and dedication ceremony is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 30, at 1 p.m. at Fire Station 4, located at 2415 S. Huron Parkway.
The event will recognize the completion of the reconstructed station while honoring Mindy Kerr, Ann Arbor's first female firefighter.
Kerr's recognition adds a historical significance to the ceremony, celebrating her role in the department's history as the city introduces a new chapter in its emergency response infrastructure.
The rebuilt station represents a significant step toward incorporating sustainability into public safety facilities.
A net zero building is generally designed to balance its energy consumption with renewable energy generation over time, while carbon neutral operations aim to minimize or offset associated emissions.
City officials have identified the new station as Michigan's first facility of its kind within the fire service.
Residents attending the ceremony will have an opportunity to hear remarks from city leaders, participate in the formal dedication and take guided tours of the reconstructed building.
The tours will give visitors a closer look at the facility and its design.
