Alpena, MI – A late November burst of snow delivered nearly five inches to Alpena in a single day, pushing the northern Michigan community above its normal monthly snowfall total as colder conditions settled across the region.
According to National Weather Service climate statistics, Alpena recorded 9.7 inches of snow during November 2025, compared with a normal total of approximately 6.6 inches. That placed monthly snowfall 3.1 inches above normal, or roughly 47% higher than average.
Much of the snowfall arrived during the final days of November, when several rounds of accumulating snow affected the area.
Snowfall Intensified at Month's End The largest single day snowfall occurred Sunday, Nov. 30, when Alpena recorded 4.8 inches.
Earlier in the final week, Thursday, Nov. 27, brought 2.8 inches, followed by additional accumulation on Friday and Saturday.
Together, the final four days produced 9.1 inches of snowfall, accounting for nearly all the month's total.
Snow depth reached five inches on Nov. 30, according to the daily observations.
Temperatures Fell Into the Teens Alpena's average November temperature was 35.9 degrees, slightly below its normal monthly average.
The coldest temperature reached 18 degrees, while the warmest climbed to 55 degrees.
Temperatures dropped to freezing or below on 20 days, providing repeated opportunities for wintry conditions.
Rainfall and Snowfall Tell Different Stories Despite above normal snowfall, total precipitation reached just 1.53 inches, below the monthly normal of approximately 2.07 inches.
This distinction reflects how snowfall totals and liquid precipitation can differ during colder months.
The report also identified one daily temperature record tied during November.
For residents of Alpena County and surrounding northeastern Lower Michigan communities, the historical figures demonstrate how quickly snowfall can accumulate as winter approaches.
The November 2025 observations do not represent a current forecast, but they offer a reminder of the region's potential for significant late autumn snowfall.
