Springfield, MA – Frost could develop across portions of Massachusetts and Connecticut early Wednesday as temperatures fall into the 30s, continuing an increasingly chilly start to October across parts of the Northeast.
The National Weather Service in Boston has issued a Frost Advisory for portions of Massachusetts and Connecticut for Wednesday morning, Oct. 7. Temperatures within the affected areas are expected to fall to 33 to 36 degrees , cold enough for frost to threaten sensitive plants.
The advisory area shown by the NWS includes portions of interior Massachusetts and Connecticut, including areas around Springfield, Worcester and Hartford. The immediate Boston area and much of the southeastern Massachusetts coast are outside the highlighted advisory area.
Residents with sensitive outdoor plants should take steps to protect them before temperatures reach their lowest levels Wednesday morning.
The Massachusetts and Connecticut frost threat is part of a broader cold night across the Northeast. The National Weather Service in Albany is warning of frost and freezing conditions across portions of eastern New York and western New England, where temperatures could fall into the upper 20s to mid 30s. Frost is also possible farther south in portions of Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
The expanding frost footprint is another sign of the seasonal transition underway in October. Farther west, forecasters are already watching a separate storm that could bring accumulating mountain snow to Colorado next week . The National Weather Service in Pueblo has stressed that winter weather during October is not unusual, particularly in the mountains.
That developing Rockies system is separate from Wednesday morning's New England frost, and current information does not establish that it will eventually affect Massachusetts or Connecticut.
For now, residents across the Frost Advisory area should prepare for temperatures near the mid 30s Wednesday morning and protect sensitive vegetation, while watching subsequent forecasts as colder fall weather becomes increasingly common.
