Boston, MA – Some of the coldest temperatures of the fall season are expected across Massachusetts and southern New England tonight, with inland communities potentially dropping into the lower 20s as clear skies and calm winds allow temperatures to fall sharply overnight.
According to the National Weather Service in Boston, high pressure building into the region Tuesday, Oct. 27, will create favorable conditions for rapid nighttime cooling. Temperatures could fall to between 20 and 25 degrees in some inland locations by early Wednesday morning.
Inland Massachusetts Faces the Coldest Temperatures
Communities across western and north central Massachusetts are expected to experience some of the lowest readings.
The National Weather Service forecast indicates temperatures near 24 degrees around Greenfield, 28 degrees near Fitchburg and Pittsfield, and approximately 31 degrees around Great Barrington.
Springfield could fall to around 28 degrees, while Worcester is forecast near 34 degrees.
These readings could produce freezing conditions across inland areas, particularly in sheltered valleys and locations away from urban development.
Boston and Coastal Communities Stay Warmer
Temperatures along the Interstate 95 corridor and coastal areas are expected to remain somewhat milder.
Boston is forecast to reach an overnight low near 38 degrees, while Plymouth could drop to approximately 34 degrees.
Providence, Rhode Island, is expected to reach around 36 degrees, while Hartford, Connecticut, could fall to approximately 35 degrees.
The weather service attributes the temperature differences to radiational cooling, which occurs when heat escapes rapidly from the ground under clear skies and light winds.
Residents Should Prepare for Freezing Conditions
Residents in colder inland communities should consider protecting sensitive outdoor plants and checking exposed water fixtures before temperatures fall Tuesday night.
Drivers traveling early Wednesday should also remain alert for isolated frost or slick spots where moisture is present.
The coldest conditions are expected overnight into Wednesday morning, with temperatures gradually recovering after sunrise.
