BOSTON, MA – Millions of residents across southern New England could face strong to severe thunderstorms Friday evening, October 16, as an approaching cold front threatens to bring damaging wind gusts, frequent lightning and locally heavy rainfall. The greatest concern is between 5 and 10 p.m., potentially affecting evening travel and outdoor activities.
According to the National Weather Service in Boston, showers began moving into the region Friday morning, with a temporary break in precipitation expected during the late morning and early afternoon.
However, conditions could become more active later Friday as a strong cold front moves across Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut.
Forecasters say a line of strong to severe thunderstorms could develop during the evening hours , with damaging winds and frequent lightning representing the primary threats.
The Storm Prediction Center has placed southwestern portions of southern New England under a Slight Risk, Level 2 of 5, for severe thunderstorms.
This higher risk area includes portions of Connecticut and areas near the southwestern Massachusetts border.
Much of the remaining region, including Boston, Worcester, Providence and surrounding communities, is under a Marginal Risk, Level 1 of 5.
While severe storms are possible across much of southern New England, the National Weather Service emphasizes that not every community will experience severe weather.
Strong thunderstorms could produce damaging wind gusts capable of bringing down tree limbs and causing isolated power outages.
Frequent lightning could also create dangerous conditions for outdoor activities, while locally heavy rainfall may temporarily reduce visibility for drivers.
Residents with Friday evening plans should remain alert between 5 and 10 p.m. , when the strongest thunderstorms are most likely.
People attending outdoor events should identify nearby indoor shelter and monitor official weather alerts.
Drivers traveling along Interstate 90, Interstate 95 and other major highways should be prepared for rapidly changing conditions.
