Boston, MA – Three words appearing in a winter weather warning could signal a storm far more dangerous than the snow and ice New England residents encounter every year. From Massachusetts to Maine, a change in National Weather Service warning language could become especially important during the 2026 27 winter season.
According to NOAA's Weather Prediction Center, the National Weather Service is expanding the use of "Particularly Dangerous Situation," or PDS, wording in select Blizzard Warnings and Ice Storm Warnings this winter.
The terminology is reserved for rare, potentially historic events when forecasters have high confidence that extreme conditions threaten human life and critical infrastructure.
Three Words That Could Signal a Winter Emergency
New England is no stranger to powerful nor'easters, heavy snowfall and dangerous coastal winter storms.
But seeing "Particularly Dangerous Situation" within an official warning would signal something exceptional.
A Blizzard Warning already indicates dangerous winds and severely restricted visibility. Adding PDS wording emphasizes that forecasters anticipate an unusually serious threat.
Why Could This Matter Across New England?
From Boston and Worcester, Massachusetts, to Portland, Maine, severe winter storms can disrupt major highways, strand motorists and overwhelm transportation networks.
Extreme blizzard conditions could make portions of Interstate 95 and other major routes nearly impassable.
Significant ice accumulation could also bring down trees and power lines, potentially leaving communities without electricity during dangerously cold conditions.
These are examples of the severe impacts that could justify heightened warning language, not predictions of an approaching storm.
Is PDS a New Type of Winter Warning?
No. PDS is not a separate warning category or a new storm classification.
Instead, it strengthens the wording within certain existing Blizzard Warnings and Ice Storm Warnings when forecasters identify exceptional danger.
Most winter storms will not receive this designation.
What Should Residents Do if They See These Three Words?
NOAA urges residents receiving warnings containing PDS wording to stay off roads, exercise extreme caution and take immediate protective action.
The expansion does not mean a catastrophic storm is currently forecast for Maine, Massachusetts or neighboring New England states.
However, if "Particularly Dangerous Situation" appears in a winter warning this season, residents should recognize it as an urgent signal that conditions could become exceptionally life threatening.
