Boston, MA – A powerful September nor'easter is winding down across New England after unloading several inches of rain, including totals topping 6 inches in parts of Massachusetts and more than 4 inches in Rhode Island, Connecticut and Maine.
According to the NOAA Weather Prediction Center, preliminary rainfall estimates from Friday through Monday show some of the heaviest totals concentrated across southeastern Massachusetts, Rhode Island and nearby coastal areas.
Several communities recorded exceptional amounts. Wareham, Massachusetts, measured 6.94 inches , while Plymouth reported 6.73 inches and Norton received 6.67 inches . Providence, Rhode Island, recorded 4.12 inches at T.F. Green Airport.
Rainfall also spread farther west and north. Durham, Connecticut, reported 4.22 inches , while Scarborough, Maine, measured 4 inches . Boston's Logan International Airport recorded 3.16 inches .
The Weather Prediction Center's broader storm analysis showed even higher totals outside New England, including 8.25 inches in Neptune City, New Jersey , demonstrating the wide footprint of the storm along the Northeast corridor.
The National Weather Service in Boston said the most impressive New England rainfall was focused across Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts, extending northwest into southern Worcester County.
Forecasters said an additional 0.5 to 1 inch of rain remained possible Monday before conditions begin drying out overnight.
The storm's rainfall totals remain preliminary as additional observations are reviewed.
For New England residents, the main story Monday is the gradual end of the soaking weather after a multi day stretch of heavy rain that affected communities from Connecticut and Rhode Island through Massachusetts and into Maine.
Conditions are expected to improve as the nor'easter pulls away from the region.
