BOSTON, MA – Residents across southern New England should prepare for a widespread soaking rainfall beginning Thursday, November 5, with some communities in Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts potentially receiving up to 3 inches of rain before conditions improve Saturday night.
According to the National Weather Service in Boston/Norton, rain will first develop across western Massachusetts Thursday afternoon before spreading eastward and becoming more widespread Thursday night into Friday.
Widespread Rain Arrives Thursday Night The approaching weather system is expected to bring a prolonged period of wet conditions across Massachusetts, Rhode Island and portions of Connecticut.
Rain chances will increase Thursday evening, with widespread rainfall expected Friday, November 6.
National Weather Service projections show precipitation probabilities reaching 90% to 100% Friday in several communities, including Boston, Providence, Worcester and Newport.
The persistent rainfall could affect Friday morning and evening commutes, creating wet roadways and reduced visibility during heavier showers.
Residents traveling throughout southern New England should allow additional time and remain alert to changing conditions.
Up to 3 Inches Possible in Southeastern Areas Rainfall totals will vary considerably depending on location.
Western portions of the forecast area could receive approximately half an inch, while Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts may see totals approaching 3 inches through Saturday.
Communities around Providence, Newport, New Bedford and southeastern coastal Massachusetts are among the areas where higher rainfall amounts are possible.
Localized ponding may develop in poorly drained areas if heavier rainfall occurs.
Rain Gradually Ends Saturday Rain chances will continue Saturday, November 7, although precipitation is expected to gradually diminish during the afternoon and evening.
Some additional showers remain possible Sunday, but the widespread soaking rainfall should be ending.
Residents should monitor updated National Weather Service forecasts as rainfall amounts and timing become clearer.
Drivers are reminded to avoid traveling through flooded roadways and use caution during periods of reduced visibility
