BOSTON, MA – Residents across New England could experience a cooler than normal stretch of October weather beginning Friday, Oct. 16, as a new federal outlook signals increased chances of below average temperatures across much of the region through Tuesday, Oct. 20.
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Climate Prediction Center, the latest 6 10 day temperature outlook, issued Saturday, Oct. 10, favors below normal temperatures across Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island during the five day period.
The cooler outlook extends across much of the Northeast, with some of the strongest below normal temperature signals concentrated in northern New England, particularly Maine.
While the outlook does not provide specific daytime highs or overnight lows, the forecast suggests temperatures are more likely to fall below typical mid October averages during this period.
What About Rain Across New England?
The Climate Prediction Center's accompanying precipitation outlook indicates near normal precipitation is favored across most of New England between Oct. 16 and Oct. 20.
This means the region is not currently showing a strong signal for either unusually wet or unusually dry conditions during the forecast window.
However, near normal precipitation probabilities do not rule out individual rain events, changing weather conditions or localized travel disruptions.
What Residents Should Expect
The cooler temperature pattern could be noticeable for residents traveling during the morning and evening hours, attending outdoor events or planning weekend activities.
Drivers and commuters should monitor local forecasts for updated temperature readings, rainfall timing and changing road conditions as Friday approaches.
The broader national outlook shows a sharp contrast, with above normal temperatures favored across much of the western United States while New England leans cooler.
Residents throughout the six state region should continue checking National Weather Service forecasts for more specific daily conditions as the Oct. 16 20 period approaches.
