Boston, MA – A cooler than normal weather pattern is favored across New England beginning Saturday, October 17, with federal forecasters highlighting increased chances of below average temperatures through Wednesday, October 21. A separate outlook also identifies a slight risk of unusually cold conditions in portions of the region early next week.
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Climate Prediction Center, the latest 6 10 day temperature outlook, issued Sunday, October 11, favors below normal temperatures across all six New England states during the October 17 21 period.
The outlook includes Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine, with probabilities generally ranging from 40% to 60% across much of the region.
NOAA Highlights October 19 Cold Risk
A separate hazardous temperature outlook, valid October 19 25, identifies a slight risk of much below normal temperatures on Monday, October 19.
The highlighted area includes portions of northern and eastern New England, with the strongest emphasis near Maine and surrounding northeastern areas.
The slight risk designation represents a 20% to 40% probability of temperatures meeting the outlook's hazardous cold criteria.
It does not mean freezing temperatures are guaranteed, and specific overnight lows will depend on location and elevation.
Precipitation Outlook Favors Drier Conditions
NOAA's accompanying precipitation outlook also favors below normal precipitation across much of New England during October 17 21.
Parts of Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Vermont and New Hampshire fall within the broader dry signal, while portions of northern Maine show a weaker tendency toward below normal precipitation.
The forecast does not rule out rain during the period.
What Residents Should Know
The cooler outlook could affect outdoor activities, fall travel and residents spending extended periods outside, particularly during overnight and early morning hours.
Communities across the Boston, Providence, Hartford, Burlington and Portland metropolitan areas should monitor updated National Weather Service forecasts for specific temperature expectations.
The Climate Prediction Center's extended outlook describes regional probabilities rather than exact daily highs and lows.
Residents should watch for additional updates as the October 17 21 period approaches.
