Boston, MA – Halloween is approaching, and families across New England are wondering whether trick or treaters will need heavy winter coats or rain gear Saturday, Oct. 31. An early federal weather outlook suggests warmer than normal conditions could favor much of the region during Halloween week, although rain chances remain uncertain.
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Climate Prediction Center, its 8 14 day outlook issued Saturday, Oct. 17, favors above normal temperatures across Maine, Massachusetts and much of the eastern United States from Sunday, Oct. 25, through Saturday, Oct. 31.
The strongest signals for unusual warmth extend across the Midwest and Great Lakes, with above normal temperatures stretching into the Northeast and south toward Texas.
Will Halloween night be warm enough for trick or treating?
For New England, the outlook is encouraging for families hoping to avoid unusually cold Halloween weather. However, above normal temperatures do not necessarily mean warm evenings. Children in Maine, Massachusetts and neighboring states may still need jackets or layers after sunset.
The precipitation outlook also offers some encouraging signs. NOAA favors below normal precipitation across portions of the Northeast, including much of Maine and Massachusetts, during the Oct. 25 31 period.
That could improve the overall outlook for outdoor Halloween activities, but it does not guarantee dry conditions Saturday evening.
Could rain still disrupt Halloween plans?
Yes. NOAA's longer range outlook measures the probability of temperatures and precipitation falling above or below seasonal averages across an entire week. It cannot pinpoint whether rain will fall during neighborhood trick or treating hours.
Elsewhere, wetter than normal conditions are favored across much of the western United States, while the central and eastern regions generally lean drier or closer to normal.
For now, New England families have reason for cautious optimism: Halloween week may be milder and drier than usual, but a reliable forecast for Saturday night's temperatures and rain chances will require updates closer to Oct. 31.
