BOSTON — Homeowners across Massachusetts preparing for winter 2026/27 may want to put frozen pipe prevention near the top of their seasonal home prep list as freezing temperatures become increasingly common heading deeper into November.
Cold weather can create problems for plumbing located in unheated or poorly insulated parts of a home. Pipes running through basements, crawl spaces, garages, exterior walls and other exposed areas can be especially vulnerable when temperatures remain below freezing for extended periods.
Homeowners can lower the risk by checking exposed plumbing and adding insulation where needed. Outdoor hoses should be disconnected, exterior faucets inspected and openings that allow cold air into areas around pipes sealed before harsher winter weather arrives.
During especially cold periods, residents may also consider opening cabinet doors beneath sinks to allow warmer indoor air to circulate around plumbing located near exterior walls.
Knowing the location of a home's main water shutoff valve is another important part of winter preparation. If a pipe freezes and later bursts, quickly shutting off the water can help limit damage inside the home.
Frozen pipes can become especially costly because the damage may not become apparent until temperatures rise and ice inside the plumbing begins to thaw.
Boston homeowners and residents elsewhere across Massachusetts can also use early November as an opportunity to inspect heating systems, replace furnace or boiler filters where applicable, clear gutters and confirm that smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are working properly.
Winter home preparation does not need to wait until a major storm or extreme cold outbreak is in the forecast. Completing basic maintenance before sustained freezing temperatures arrive can give homeowners more time to identify problems before they become emergencies.
Residents should continue monitoring local forecasts throughout the 2026/27 winter season and pay close attention to periods of prolonged freezing weather that could increase the risk of frozen or burst pipes.
