Boston, MA – A dead battery, worn tires or failing brakes could turn an ordinary winter drive into a roadside emergency across Massachusetts. From Boston and Worcester to Springfield, Lowell, Cambridge, Brockton, Pittsfield and New Bedford, drivers should inspect critical vehicle systems before snow and ice create hazardous travel conditions.
According to the National Weather Service NWS , winter vehicle preparation includes checking tires, brakes, windshield wipers, washer fluid and batteries. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration NHTSA also recommends inspecting essential systems and carrying emergency supplies before winter travel.
5 Car Problems to Fix Before Snow Arrives 1. Worn tires or low tire pressure
Tires with insufficient tread can lose traction on snow covered or icy pavement. Check tire pressure against the manufacturer's recommendation, usually listed on the driver's door jamb. Winter tires can improve traction in cold, snowy conditions.
2. Brakes that need attention
Snow and ice increase stopping distances. Have a qualified mechanic inspect worn or poorly performing brakes. All wheel drive may improve acceleration in snow, but it does not eliminate slippery road stopping risks.
3. Damaged windshield wipers
Replace streaking or damaged wiper blades and use winter rated windshield washer fluid. Keep an ice scraper and snow brush in the vehicle to maintain visibility.
4. A weak or aging battery
Cold weather reduces battery performance and can expose an aging battery's weaknesses. Have the battery and charging system tested before winter. Consider keeping a portable jump starter available.
5. Heating, lighting or fluid problems
Inspect the heater, windshield defroster, headlights, brake lights and engine coolant protection. Follow manufacturer recommendations for engine oil and other essential fluids.
Massachusetts Roads That Demand Winter Caution Snow, freezing rain and ice can affect Interstate 90, Interstate 93, Interstate 95, Interstate 91, Interstate 495 and Route 2.
Drivers in Suffolk, Middlesex, Worcester, Hampden, Berkshire, Bristol and Plymouth counties may encounter different conditions during the same storm. Western Massachusetts elevations can receive significant snowfall while coastal communities experience rain, sleet or rapidly changing temperatures.
What to Keep in Your Vehicle The NHTSA recommends emergency supplies such as blankets, warm clothing, water, nonperishable food, a flashlight and a phone charger. A shovel, jumper cables or portable jump starter, and reflective warning devices can also help during a breakdown.
Before leaving, check forecasts and road conditions, clear snow from the entire vehicle and allow extra travel time.
If stranded in severe weather, staying with the vehicle may be safer than walking for help. Keep the exhaust pipe clear before running the engine to reduce carbon monoxide risks.
