Boston, MA – Residents across Massachusetts and southern New England are facing a sharp overnight temperature drop Saturday, October 17, with some communities expected to fall well below freezing by early Sunday morning. Gusty northwest winds will make conditions feel even colder before skies clear and temperatures plunge overnight.
According to the National Weather Service in Boston, lingering showers across southeastern Massachusetts, Rhode Island and eastern Connecticut will gradually taper off Saturday morning into the afternoon.
Temperatures Saturday are expected to reach only 41 to 52 degrees across the region, with gusty northwest winds making it feel approximately 5 to 10 degrees colder than the actual air temperature.
Temperatures Could Drop to 23 Degrees Tonight
The most significant temperature drop is expected Saturday night into early Sunday, October 18.
The National Weather Service forecasts overnight lows ranging from 23 to 36 degrees, with the coldest conditions expected across interior portions of southern New England.
Many inland communities could experience subfreezing temperatures as winds diminish and skies clear.
These conditions could damage sensitive vegetation, outdoor flowers and unprotected garden plants.
Residents should consider bringing potted plants indoors and covering vulnerable vegetation before temperatures fall Saturday evening.
Coastal communities, including portions of the Boston metropolitan area, may remain somewhat warmer than inland locations.
Sunday Brings Sunshine but Another Cold Night
Sunday will feature dry conditions, sunshine and lighter winds across much of Massachusetts.
Afternoon temperatures are expected to recover into the 52 to 56 degree range.
However, another chilly night is forecast, with temperatures dropping between 29 and 41 degrees Sunday night.
Monday Warmup Could Bring Temperatures Near 61 Degrees
By Monday, October 19, temperatures are forecast to climb into the 57 to 61 degree range.
Cloud cover will gradually increase from southeast to northwest, with only a low chance of showers across southeastern New England.
Residents should monitor local forecasts for updated temperature information, particularly in inland communities where freezing conditions are most likely.
