BOSTON, Massachusetts – Massachusetts is opening November with a sharp overnight chill followed by temperatures approaching 70 degrees around Boston, but NOAA's longer range outlook is already putting Thanksgiving holiday travel, rain and possible snow back into the conversation.
Boston could fall to 33 degrees Saturday night before warming to 68 Monday and 69 Wednesday. By Friday, rain chances increase to 60%, while federal outlooks favor above normal temperatures across Massachusetts deeper into November.
Boston Faces 33 Degree Night Before Temperatures Approach 70 According to the National Weather Service, Boston will see sunshine Saturday, Oct. 31, with a high near 53 degrees before temperatures fall to around 33 overnight.
Sunday brings another sunny afternoon with a high near 60 degrees, followed by a clear night and a low around 44.
The warming trend continues Monday, when temperatures reach approximately 68 degrees. Tuesday brings mostly sunny skies and a high near 66, while Wednesday climbs to around 69.
Rain chances begin increasing Thursday, with a 30% chance of showers during the afternoon and 40% Thursday night.
By Friday, showers become likely, with precipitation chances reaching 60% and a high near 68.
Massachusetts residents will also turn clocks back one hour at 2 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 1, bringing earlier sunsets as the first full week of November begins.
NOAA November Outlook Favors Warmth Before Thanksgiving NOAA's Climate Prediction Center outlooks issued Oct. 30 favor above normal temperatures across Massachusetts during Nov. 5 9 and Nov. 7 13.
That warmer than normal signal continues into Nov. 14 27, with probabilities of above normal temperatures generally around 50 60% across much of Massachusetts.
Precipitation trends are less consistent.
During Nov. 5 9, above normal precipitation is favored across Massachusetts, including the Boston area.
The Nov. 7 13 outlook shows no clear preference for above or below normal precipitation around Boston.
By Nov. 14 27, NOAA again favors above normal precipitation across eastern Massachusetts, although the signal is relatively modest, generally around 33 40%.
The period includes Thanksgiving on Thursday, Nov. 26, and the surrounding holiday travel window.
Thanksgiving Holiday Travel: Rain or Snow for Massachusetts? The combination of favored above normal temperatures and precipitation raises an early question for Thanksgiving travelers: Could Massachusetts see rain, snow or a mixture of both?
NOAA's extended outlook does not identify a specific Thanksgiving storm, snowfall accumulation or travel disruption.
Above normal temperatures are favored across Massachusetts, but individual colder days remain possible. The outlook cannot determine precipitation type on Thanksgiving Day.
For Boston, the more immediate weather story is the contrast between Saturday night's low near 33 degrees and temperatures approaching 70 by midweek.
Residents should expect several dry, mild afternoons before rain chances increase late next week, while Thanksgiving rain and snow possibilities remain unresolved.
