Boston, MA – Residents across Massachusetts and southern New England should prepare for a potentially stormy Friday evening, October 16, as a powerful cold front could trigger isolated severe thunderstorms capable of producing damaging winds, frequent lightning and locally heavy rainfall.
According to the National Weather Service in Boston, showers are expected to arrive before daybreak Friday, followed by a temporary break in rainfall during the late morning and early afternoon.
However, conditions could become more hazardous later Friday as a strong cold front moves across the region.
The primary window for potentially severe thunderstorms is 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. Friday, coinciding with evening travel, outdoor activities and Friday night events.
Forecasters have placed portions of southwestern southern New England under a Level 2 out of 5 Slight Risk for severe thunderstorms.
The elevated threat includes parts of Connecticut and nearby southwestern areas of the region, while much of Massachusetts, Rhode Island and surrounding communities remain under a Level 1 Marginal Risk.
Communities around Springfield, Worcester, Providence and Boston could experience thunderstorms, although the risk varies significantly by location.
Areas north of Amherst, Worcester and Boston currently have the lowest severe weather threat.
Damaging wind gusts and frequent lightning are the primary concerns, with locally heavy rainfall also possible.
Not every community will experience severe weather, and forecasters emphasize that the threat remains variable across southern New England.
Residents planning to travel Friday evening should monitor changing weather conditions, particularly along Interstate 90, Interstate 91, Interstate 95 and other major regional highways.
Outdoor events could also be affected if thunderstorms develop during the evening hours.
The National Weather Service encourages residents to remain weather aware and prepare to move indoors if thunderstorms approach.
Additional forecast updates may refine the areas facing the greatest severe weather risk before Friday evening.
