Boston, MA – Massachusetts residents face a changing weather pattern Tuesday, October 13, through Saturday, October 17, as a cold front brings scattered showers before a more widespread round of rainfall arrives Friday, potentially affecting travel across much of southern New England.
According to the National Weather Service in Boston/Norton, a backdoor cold front is moving across the region Tuesday morning, bringing overcast skies and scattered showers. Cloudy conditions are expected to persist throughout the day, with additional showers possible into Tuesday night.
Rain chances are highest near the northern Massachusetts border during the initial round.
Friday Rain Chances Climb Above 90%
After a relatively dry Wednesday and Thursday, October 14 15, forecasters expect a significant increase in precipitation chances Friday, October 16.
The Weather Service's five day outlook shows Friday afternoon rain probabilities reaching 90% in Boston, 95% in Worcester, 95% in Gloucester and 95% in Lowell.
Springfield and Providence, Rhode Island, also face precipitation probabilities near 90%, while New Bedford could see chances reach 90%.
These probabilities indicate the likelihood of measurable precipitation, not the expected rainfall amount.
The widespread rain could create wet roadways and reduced visibility during Friday's afternoon and evening commutes, particularly along Interstate 90, Interstate 93 and Interstate 95.
Unsettled Conditions May Continue Saturday
Rain chances remain elevated into early Saturday, October 17, especially across coastal and southeastern Massachusetts.
The forecast shows Saturday morning precipitation probabilities near 25% in Boston, 30% in Gloucester and 45% in Hyannis before generally decreasing later in the day.
While widespread severe weather is not indicated in the provided forecast, residents should prepare for potentially slippery roads and changing travel conditions Friday.
Motorists should allow additional travel time during periods of heavier rainfall and monitor updated National Weather Service forecasts as the late week system approaches.
