BOSTON, MA – Massachusetts residents could face a windy and rainy end to the week as forecasters monitor a potentially stronger storm system expected to affect southern New England Friday, Oct. 16, into Saturday, Oct. 17.
According to the National Weather Service in Boston, several periods of rain and breezy conditions are expected this week, with the strongest winds likely accompanying a more significant rainstorm late Friday into Saturday.
Rain affecting the region Monday morning, Oct. 12, is expected to end before another round of precipitation develops Tuesday into Tuesday night.
However, forecasters are paying particular attention to the late week system, which could bring more widespread rainfall and stronger wind gusts across Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut.
The latest forecast indicates wind gusts could approach or exceed 30 mph in several Massachusetts communities Saturday.
Boston, Worcester, Springfield, Lowell and other locations could experience gusts reaching approximately 30 to 36 mph during portions of the weekend, according to the National Weather Service forecast graphic.
Coastal areas, including Cape Cod and the Islands, could also experience periods of gusty conditions as the system moves through.
Rain chances increase substantially Friday, with probabilities reaching approximately 70% to 85% in several Massachusetts locations during the afternoon and evening.
The combination of rainfall and gusty winds could create difficult conditions for motorists, particularly on exposed highways, bridges and coastal roadways.
Residents planning outdoor events or weekend travel should monitor forecasts as the storm approaches.
While the National Weather Service is monitoring the potential for a stronger system, the forecast does not establish that damaging winds, widespread flooding or severe thunderstorms will occur.
The exact timing and strength of the late week storm remain subject to change.
